How it works
openshare pairs two or more browsers directly over WebRTC — including across different networks, not just the same Wi-Fi that other browser-based tools require. It’s free, with no signup, nothing to install, and no file size limit.

Start or join a session
One person starts a session and gets a link, a QR code, and a 6-character code. Anyone with it can join — from the link, by scanning the code, or by typing it in — and a session isn’t limited to two people: invite up to fifty devices at once. The session owner can cap that number and choose whether everyone can drop in files or only they can.

The two browsers connect directly
openshare negotiates a peer-to-peer WebRTC connection between the devices. Unlike most browser-based alternatives, it isn’t limited to a shared Wi-Fi network — a laptop on office Wi-Fi and a phone on mobile data connect just as easily as two devices side by side.

Send files or edit together
Drag in files of any size, or start typing in the shared text and code editor — everyone in the session sees changes live. It all streams straight from one browser to the other, not through a middleman.
Nothing touches a server
Your files and text never pass through openshare’s servers. The server’s only job is signaling — helping the two browsers find each other and agree on an encrypted connection. Once that handshake finishes, everything you drag in or type travels directly from one browser to the other. Close the tab, and the session — and everything shared in it — is gone.

Common questions
- Do both people need to install anything?
- No. openshare runs entirely in the browser on both devices, so there is nothing to download and no account to create on either end.
- Do we need to be on the same Wi-Fi?
- No. Unlike most similar tools, openshare works across different networks — one person can be on office Wi-Fi and the other on mobile data, and the two browsers will still connect directly.
- Is there a file size limit?
- No. Files stream directly between the two browsers over WebRTC instead of being uploaded to a server, so there is no cloud storage cap to run into.
- Are my files stored anywhere?
- No. The server only helps the two browsers find each other and set up an encrypted connection — your files and text never pass through it. Close the tab and the session is gone.
- Can we edit text or code together, not just send files?
- Yes. Every session includes a shared text and code editor, so both people can type and see each other’s changes live, not just exchange files.
